What is Japanese hair straightening?

Japanese hair straightening is a method of permanently straightening hair that was developed in Japan in 1996. Whether you have afro, frizzy, or just wavy hair, this long-lasting chemical treatment promises to leave you with locks to be proud of.

How does it work?

Japanese hair straightening works by breaking the protein bonds in individual strands of hair that gives hair its shape. Stylists then use flat irons to complement the chemical process and recondition the hair into the style of your choice – this is why the process is sometimes known as “thermal reconditioning”.

What does the process entail?

Depending on the length, thickness, and condition of your hair, Japanese hair straightening typically takes anywhere from 3 to 8 hours.

The first step in the process is a thorough shampoo. Next, an activator solution is applied to break down the protein bonds in the hair. Once your hair is ready, it will be rinsed, a conditioner and heat protector will be applied, and then it will be ironed. Finally, a neutralizer solution will be applied before your hair is blow-dried straight.

How long does it last?

Japanese hair straightening is permanent, so once your hair is straight, it stays straight. The effect lasts between 3 and 12 months, so as your hair grows out you’ll just need to have your roots touched up.

What are the benefits of Japanese hair straightening?

With Japanese hair straightening you get sleek, smooth hair that’s easy to manage. Gone are the days where you have to spend hours blow-drying your hair. With Japanese hair straightening you can achieve a salon finish with minimal effort – no more flat-ironing and using excessive products trying to tame your curls.

Who would benefit from this?

If you have coarse, frizzy, curly hair and love the poker-straight look, Japanese hair straightening is for you. Anyone who is short on time would also benefit – permanently straight hair is easier to manage and will cut your hair maintenance time in half.

Is Japanese hair straightening safe during pregnancy?

Evidence suggests that the absorption of chemicals from hair processing is minimal, so there should be no problem in achieving sleek, glossy hair while pregnant. For customers concerned about chemicals, Zoltan also offers a formaldehyde-free straightening system and regularly tests for formaldehyde in the salon.

Is there any aftercare treatment?

You should not wash or tie back your hair for 48-72 hours after treatment, to ensure your locks remain straight and smooth. After that, feel free to wash and style as normal, but be sure to use a good conditioner to maintain the quality of your hair.
